On July 10, 2023, Microsoft will be rolling out a significant change to their Multifactor Authentication (MFA) services. This change will affect clients currently receiving MFA codes via Text message, SMS, or voice and is not optional.
On or after this date, those using the above methods will be prompted to install and use the Microsoft Authenticator app on their mobile device when entering an MFA code. When signing in, they will receive a prompt similar to this:
If the user clicks “Next”, they will be walked through a series of steps to walk through installing the Microsoft Authenticator app on their phone or mobile device and setting up their account.
If the user clicks “Not Now”, they will be allowed to sign in, but by default they can only postpone the setup 3 times. After that, they will be required to complete the process to sign in.
Please note- This does not affect DUO or AuthPoint generated MFA in use by some clients.
